Amongst Angels in an amalgamation of medieval and renaissance imagery, reimagined for a contemporary audience. The figure in the foreground is one of the Mourners of Dijon, sculpted by medieval artist Claus Sluter. This singular figure, isolated by grief and prayer, has only the mischievously smiling putti for company, while the feet of Da Vinci’s Baptism of Christ materialize in the corner. Placed in a bright, lush setting initially inspired by Bosch’s Temptation of St. Anthony, this painting attempts to call together past scenes of grief and triumph into a new setting.
